Why Is My Tooth Sensitive to Hot Or/And Cold?

Schedule a Dental Consultation

Sensitivity to hot or/and cold on a tooth can be an indicator of quite a few things. That said, now is not the time to worry! Wilmette Dental is right here to help you get to the root of the issue! One of the best things to do when faced with discomfort in your teeth and gums is to get educated about the common culprits and that’s what this article is here to help with! So take a deep breath and relax. We have you taken care of, even as your Emergency Dentist if need be.

Sometimes the sensitivity can come from an irritant like teeth grinding at night that is catching up with you (if you’re not wearing a mouthguard at night). It could also be a symptom of a tooth that needs a root canal and many variations in between.

The Most Common Reasons for Tooth Sensitivity to Hot or/and Cold are:

  • Fillings that are either not set correctly, or are old and starting to fail
  • Cavities that have not yet been addressed
  • Chipped or cracked tooth
  • Gum Disease
  • Food is wedged or stuck between teeth which have already had work
  • Tooth abscess or infection
  • You need a root canal due to a dying, infected, or inflamed pulp in your tooth

The best way to figure out what it is, is to schedule an appointment. Here at Wilmette Dental, we use state of the art technology and equipment to help get you a resolve quickly. Few things are more frustrating than pain and discomfort in your mouth and we understand that here.

You certainly do not want to wait until the pain is unbearable. Preventive health is always more impactful than reactive health options, and can be more affordable as well.

Another way to tell if the condition is more, or less, serious is to monitor whether your pain comes and goes, is periodic and sporadic, or if it’s constant, whether a dull ache or painful upon a consistent trigger (like chewing or biting down).

Thorough consultations and peace of mind are things you can expect as standard around here at Wilmette Dental. With Marquette graduates Dr. Robert Madrigal and Dr. Tom Moscinski who grew up Glenview and neighboring Batavia, our doctors have a passion for the people in the community. It’s because we care deeply, right down to the root.
