Why Do I Grind My Teeth in My Sleep?

Schedule a Dental Consultation

Teeth grinding, especially in your sleep, is a common thing that many people experience. The body and the mind are connected more intimately than we understand on a given day. When we get caught up in the daily grind, sometimes stresses can trigger a tension our bodies park and hold on to. Then, as we lay down to rest our minds at night, our bodies take on a mind of their own, reacting to all those triggers that have happened throughout the day, or months, or years. Teeth grinding is commonly associated with a sort of involuntary reaction in our sleep.

What Can I Do About Grinding My Teeth at Night?

Also known as “Bruxism”, teeth grinding, especially in our sleep can cause short, and long term effects. Some of the short term effects might be waking up to a headache in the morning from all the unsolicited teeth clenching, and jaw tension.

Wearing a mouthguard at night, or bite splints even, can help ease the effects of teeth grinding in your sleep. Finding ways to get into a calming evening routine can also help relax both your mind and your body before drifting into sleep.

Long-term effects of teeth grinding in your sleep can be an uneven bite, or offset teeth on one side of your mouth (the side you grind on more).

Vitamin D Could Lead to Teeth Clenching in Your Sleep

Did you know that a Vitamin D deficiency can also lead to bruxism, or teeth grinding? Low consumption of calcium can also lead to this painful experience while in your sleep. Make sure to keep up with your primary care physician visits to rule out these possibilities if you are struggling with teeth grinding in your sleep. Untreated teeth clenching can lead to cracked/weakened teeth, and also Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders.
